Accounting alumna shines at Ernst & Young Saudi Arabia office

November 28, 2017

After graduating from the University of Montana master of accountancy program in 2016, Sarah Muthna took a position in the Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ernst & Young office. Muthna had passed the CPA exam and was excited to work for EY, one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, in the country where she grew up.

It didn’t take long for her to find success. After only five months on the job, Muthna, an audit associate who also earned her bachelor’s in accounting from UM, was selected as the top performing associate in the EY Jeddah office. The Jeddah office has about 350 employees, and her team provides assurance services to a variety of companies including banks, insurers, and leasing entities.

Muthna’s strong performance led to an invitation to attend the firm’s International Leadership Conference, which was held at Disney World in Florida in July 2017. She was one of only eight recent graduates from the Middle East invited to attend the conference where more than 3,300 graduates and interns from 29 different countries convened. Muthna said the highlight of her trip was meeting EY global CEO and Chair Mark Weinberger.

Muthna is a part of EY’s efforts to hire and develop more women leaders in their Middle East offices. In a country where women have far fewer rights than their counterparts, Muthna is demonstrating the potential for professional success there.

“Enjoy every single day of being a student,” Muthna said when asked about her advice for current UM students. “Stay focused on your studies, and know that your degree does not define you, but enables you to become what you want be in the future.”
