Academic Training
Dr. Shay earned his B.S. in Finance and Entrepreneurial Studies from Babson College (1987), his MBA in strategic management from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College (1991), and his Ph.D. in international business from Cornell University (1999). 

 

Teaching
Dr. Shay has taught courses at the London School of Economics, Peking University, Cornell University, Centre International de Glion, and the Australian International Hotel School.  He joined the faculty of the School of Business Administration at the University of Montana in June of 1999.   He has taught in the areas of strategic management, cross-cultural management, entrepreneurship, leadership, organizational behavior, international business, and human resource management.   Dr. Shay has earned the following teaching awards at the University of Montana:

  • John Ruffato Memorial Award - 2002-2003

  • Outstanding MBA Faculty Member - 2000-2001, 2002-2003, 2004-2005 

  • Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty Member, Management and Marketing - 2002-2003

Research

Dr. Shay was recognized in March 2006 as one of the Western Academy of Management's Ascendant Scholars, an award given to scholars who make an early and significant impact on their field. Dr. Shay's research has been published in Journal of International Business Studies, International Journal of Cross-cultural Management, Long Range Planning, Case Research Journal, Journal of Management EducationCornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, and International Journal of Organizational Analysis.  His research has been presented at the Academy of Management, the Eastern and Western Academy of Management, and the North American Case Research Association Conferences

 

Service

Dr. Shay received the University of Montana Student Affairs Faculty Recognition Award in 2004. Dr. Shay has provided assistance to the Missoula Area Youth Hockey Association, the Missoula Business Women's Network, Childcare Resources, and recently served as the Human Resources Director for Sport-specific Events for the Montana State Special Olympics Summer Games 2003. Dr. Shay was recently appointed by the Governor to the Montana Ambassadors.

 

Professional experience

Dr. Shay has been an invited speaker at the Swedish Trade Council, Pennsylvania State's Executive MBA Program, the F. W. Olin School of Business (Babson Graduate School of Management), the Johnson School of Business (Cornell University Graduate School of Business), and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In addition, he has been involved with executive training for Hyundai Corporation, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and the American Express Travel Group.

 

Dr. Shay continues to provide strategic planning, international business planning, and new venture development consulting services through Montana Business Capital Corporation and the Montana World Trade Center.  His most recent clients include: Blue Cross - Blue Shield Montana, Hi-Noon Petroleum, Big Sky Brewing Company, Precision Partners, and the Inland Northwest Space Alliance (NASA).  He provides these services in order to keep current with the practical application of what he teaches in his courses.  Dr. Shay has over 17 years of consulting experience in these areas.
