Internship Program Information for Employers with
Students Earning Academic Credit
1. The internship must align with the student’s degree and major along with development of business skills
2. When earning academic credit the student must work 50 hours per credit per semester or summer session.
3. Employers must provide the job description for the position
4. The intern(s) should have a mentor within the organization with whom they can discuss navigating their way through the organization and the internship
5. The internship may contain up to 25% clerical duties
6. Where feasible, the intern, or group of interns, should have a specific project that is new to the business and new to the student(s) and can be completed during the term of the internship
7. It is desired that the intern(s) should be exposed to the following elements over the course of the internship:
a. Demonstration of fundamental knowledge
b. Integration of business concepts
c. Written communication
d. Oral presentation(s)
e. Interpersonal communications
f. Opportunity to demonstrate initiative and critical thinking skills
g. Ethical considerations/dilemmas
h. Internet technology used in creating innovation and achieving competitive advantage
i. Use of spreadsheets and other technology as appropriate
