The University of
Montana has recognized Dr. Fleming
with the Outstanding University Advisor Award,
with the Distinguished Service to International Education Award, and
as an Inspirational Teacher.
The Missoula YWCA
honored her with the Silver Achievement Award for Leadership.
Maureen J. Fleming is a trustee of the Montana Board of Investments.
This group is responsible for managing the assets of the State of
Montana, which are approximately $14 billion dollars. She Chairs the
Human Resource Committee of the Board of Investments and has been
very influential in resolving a large number of governance and
employee issues. She has also served on the Audit Committee and the
Governance Committee of the board. Dr. Fleming was recently
reappointed to an unprecedented fourth term serving under the
administration of four separate Governors. She has been active over
her career with both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations as
a member of their respective boards of directors. This is well
illustrated by her service as Treasurer of the 235,000 member
Society of Human Resource Management Foundation based in Washington,
D.C. As Treasurer, she directed the search for a new money manager
and facilitated the revision and development of investment and asset
allocation policies. Dr. Fleming is currently the Chair of the
Society of Human Resource Management Foundation. Dr. Fleming is an
associate in the Human Resource Management firm Personnel Plus.
Dr. Fleming is a member of the board of directors and Chair of the
Audit Committee of The Montana Economic Development and
Revitalization Institute, which seeks to improve the economy of
Montana. She serves on the board of directors as Chair of the Audit
Committee of MSE, a research and development company in Butte,
Montana. She is also a member of the Governance and Nominating
Committee and as well as the Chair of the Profitability Committee
for MSE. Fleming is a member of the board of Mountain West Bank. She
was appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Women's
Forum, which is composed of women in business and political leaders
from twenty countries. In each of these positions she has been able
to contribute to the goals of the organization, resolve conflict,
and bring a perspective from both domestic and international
business experience and teaching.
Dr. Fleming is an emerita Professor of Management and emerita
Director of the Internship Program in the School of Business
Administration at the University of Montana. In the latter position
she supervised hundreds of students each year doing internships
around the world. In working with these students her sensitivity to
cultural differences and the importance of confidentiality with
respect to both students and businesses in a variety of settings has
been a major asset.
She was born in Mundelein, Illinois and received her AB from
Mundelein College. The University of Southern Illinois awarded her
the Ph.D. in Industrial and Counseling Psychology. Following a
period of practice she became a faculty member in Management at The
University of Montana. She also held an appointment as a faculty
member in the University’s Psychology Department. Fleming has served
as Chair of the University Management Department and has accepted a
number of research and teaching opportunities outside the United
States. These include being an invited faculty member in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia, and Permanent Visiting Professor of Management at
Nankai University, one of the most distinguished universities in
China. Professor Fleming has been invited three times to lecture in
Ethics at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand. Her Teaching
and Consulting Areas include: Ethics in Business, International
Business, and Organizational Behavior. She has spoken to university
and public groups throughout the world.
In her role as an educator, Dr. Fleming has been recognized by the
University of Montana with four university wide awards. This level
of recognition exceeds that of all other faculty in the history of
the University. These awards include: Outstanding Academic Advisor;
Distinguished International Educator; John Ruffatto Memorial Award
for integrating education with business; and the Distinguished
Teaching Award. She is the author of more than one hundred articles
and several books including Effective Human Resource Management
Techniques. She is the recipient of the YWCA Silver Achievement
Award for Leadership and several other awards for service to the
University and the Community. Maureen Fleming is married to Forensic
Geologist and author Raymond Murray.
