The John Ruffatto Business Plan Competition is designed to provide a positive educational experience in which students can develop their business ideas and receive feedback and advice from experienced business professionals, to create a forum for students to interact with the community, and to foster economic growth.

Each spring, faculties from Montana higher education institutions nominate 30 teams to be considered for the competition. From those 30 teams, a distinguished group of judges invites the 15 teams with the strongest business plans to spend a day at SoBA learning from prominent entrepreneurs and competing for prize money and the opportunity to attract investors.

The competition culminates at an exciting final round event attended by over 200 people. Since its inaugural year 1989, over 60 competitor plans have been used to start businesses and support of sponsors and private donors continues to grow.

Students submit their business plan and compete against students from across the state
Participants present their business plans to venture capitalists, angel investors, bankers, and business professionals
Students gain incredible experience and receive valuable feedback
Winners receive prize money and make the contacts they need to get their business of and running
