Frequently Asked Questions    
How many scholarships does SoBA award?
The number of awards vary.  There were a total of 62 scholarships awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year and 76 scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year. 

What are the award amounts for each scholarship?
Award amounts vary.  The minimum scholarship award is $400 and the maximum award is $12,000.  All scholarships are competitive but there is a possibility to receive more than one scholarship if you meet the scholarship criteria for more than one scholarship.

Is there a list of available scholarships?
Yes.  Please download a scholarship program at Scholarships Available.  The scholarship program will also list the criteria for each scholarship and the minimum grade point average.

Can freshman and sophomores apply for a scholarship?
No.  The SoBA Scholarship Program is for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.  If you have  60 credits or above by the end of Fall 2008 semester you may apply.

Are any of the scholarships renewable?
Yes.  There are a few renewable scholarships.  Please contact Lauren McLean to ensure you are still eligible to renew your current scholarship. Part of the renewal process includes re-applying to receive the renewable scholarship.

What's the minimum GPA?
The minimum GPA is 2.75 for most scholarships.

Do I have to have financial need?
There are only a few scholarships that require financial need.  Financial need is not a requirement to apply for most business scholarships.

Do I have to be a business major?
Yes!  It is extremely important that your area of interest submitted in your online application matches the area of interest on record at the Registrar's office.  This information is checked in February 2009 for current students and again in August 2009 for all students. 
Undergrad Business pre-2006 catalog: 
Your option area is your area of interest.  This will be Accounting, Financial Management, Information Systems, International Business, Management or Marketing.
Undergrad Business 2006 catalog or later:
 
Your intended specialty major is your area of interest.  This will be Accounting, Financial Management, Information Systems, International Business, Management or Marketing.  If you have not yet declared a specialty major, you may list your intended specialty major.
Graduate Students:  
Your major (MBA or MAcct) is your area of interest.  If you are a prospective graduate student, list the program you are applying for.

Do I have to be a full-time student?
You must be enrolled full-time for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.  Undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits.  Graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits.

Am I eligible if I graduate at the end of Fall 2009 semester?
No.  You must be enrolled full-time during Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 to receive a scholarship for the 09-10 academic year.

Are all scholarships for Montana residents?
No. There are scholarships that give preference to Montana residents or Montana high school graduates, but many scholarships are also available to non-Montana business students.

I missed the February 2nd deadline, can I submit a late application?
No.  Online applications must be submitted by before February 2nd at 11:59 PM (MST).

How will I know if I received a scholarship?
The Assistant Director of Development will contact you by mail and email.  Please make sure to keep your records updated by emailing any new information to scholarships@business.umt.edu
